This book documents the variety of beliefs and practices that occur during lent. These can be classified into four kinds: One is the church paraliturgy such as procession. Another kind is non-official paraliturgy developed by laity itself sometimes with priest's approval, at other times without. Examples would be public chanting of ecclesiastically approved Passion of the Christ by Mariano Pilapil, and public flagellations which are grudgingly tolerated by the priests. The third kind is non-officials private rituals, such as the procurements of amulets on Good Friday. And lastly, the Lenten art, such as drama, music sculpture, processional vehicles, decorations and cooking. It also explains the usual features of the Philippine Lent, by showing how the Filipino reshaped Christianity.
