the youngest (i one may so speak) was published in 1983. Because of this time-span, there is a certain repetition and overlapping among the papers. Also, there may perhaps be a shift in opinion or view-point: after all, one does grow (or grow up) in the space of twenty-two years. There may also be a difference of style because these papers were delivered to (or written for) different audiences. Some were read to academic groups at the universities, or written for the learned journals. Others were delivered to more general audiences. But here they are, such as they are. Appended here are a number of acknowledgments, in particular for the use of copyrighted material. But there are many individuals and groups to whom I am deeply indebted, whose names are not mentioned there. To them I express my thanks, begging the Lord, who is never outdone in generosity, to be extremely generous to them. --From the preface The papers colleceted in this volume were written over a period of twenty-two years. The oldest was a lecture delivered at Yale in 1961
