The story is set in a very small town, a friar-holding somewhere in the southern Tagalog provinces. Celso Valencia, a medical student in Manila, left school to take care of his old and ailing uncle, the Parish priest of the town. While there, he fell in love with beautiful and demure Pepita Camino, who has a host of other admirers, chief among them being Urbano Ilustre, a well-educated and a very prosperous farmer. The principal plot centers around the retrained but very keen rivalry between Celso and Urbano, each intensifying this suit by feats of courage, ingenuity and gallantry in serving the family of Pepita and the community in general. They both featured in such historically supported incidents as a "Tulisan" raid, secret meetings, a huge fire, and the daring attempt to kidnap Pepita. Intrigue and conflict comes in the person of Juan Salcedo, nicknamed Pilay. He was the ruthless overseer of the Friars who was very much piqued by Celso's and Urbano's integrity and popularity, and tried to strike at both though Pepita. --From the book cover
