The revised edition of Philippine Prose and Poetry, Volume I, is a departure from the previous editions in a twofold sense. The selections in this book have been grouped according to themes instead of types of literature as the old ones were grouped. The modern concept of learning literature is that it should be studied more as a universal expression of man's thoughts, feelings, and ideals rather than as types, period samples, or starting points for knowing the literary development in a country. This then id the reason behind the present arrangement of the selections in this volume. --From the foreword
