Wastewater treatment is a process to convert wastewater- which is water no longer needed or suitable for its most recent use - into an effluent that can be either returned to the water cycle with minimal environmental issues or reused. The principal objective of wastewater treatment in the text Handbook of Wastewater Treatment Production and Purification is generally to allow human and industrial effluents to be disposed of without danger to human health or unacceptable damage to the natural environment. First chapter deals with waste water management systems. In second chapter, we discuss waste water treatment methods. The application of various methods for the determination of metals in waste water has been discussed in third chapter. Using sawdust bio-mixture, waste-waste treatment technology and environmental mangement have been proposed in fourth chapter. A review on recent applications of electrocoagulation in treatment of water and wastewater has been introduced in fifth chapter. Sixth chapter focuses on application of ultrasonic waves for the improvement of water treatment. In seventh chapter, we describe recent literature results related to the application of magnetite nanomaterials for the removal of heavy metals and metalloids from water, mainly copper, chromium, mercury and arsenic. Eight chapter describes selected pharmaceuticals and musk compounds in wastewater. Ninth chapter provides functional evidence of microbial transformations important for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). The effect of CO2 on algal growth in industrial waste water for bioenergy and bioremediation applications has been described in tenth chapter. Sustainable sources of biomass for bioremediation of heavy metals in waste water have been proposed in eleventh chapter. The objective of twelfth chapter is to demonstrate how to apply systems analysis to the design of a water treatment system based on the concept and practice of optimization theory. Recent developments on mass spectrometry for the analysis of pesticides in wastewater have been proposed in thirteenth chapter. Fourteenth chapter discusses on removal of Cr (VI) ions from waste water by electrocoagulation using iron electrode. The aim of fifteenth chapter is to determine if the functional stabiltiy of nitrification is correlated with a stable microbial community structure in a relatively large-scale wastewater treatment plants (WWTP).
