520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "All educational institutions shall include the study of the Constitution as part of the curicula, shall inculcate patriotism and nationalism ... foster appreciation of the role of national heroes in the historical development of the country ... teach the rights and duties of citizenship ..." is the new constitutional mandate on education. It is along these objectives that this book on Philippine history and government and its constitution was written. This book was also prepared to meet the objectives as embodied in the new curriculum framework in Social Studies for high school due for implementation this year 1989. As the reader follows the different eras of our political history, he will note the emphasis placed on the Filipino culture form the barangays of the pre-Spanish era to its integration into the culture of the colonial West. Along with this is the story of the continuous struggle of the Filipinos for freedom and independence which was first lost with the coming of the Spaniards in 1521. The more than 300 years of Spanish rule (1565-1898) witnessed numerous uprisings against Spanish brutalities and injustices but failed due to the absence of a national consciousness. --Preface of the book.
