520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. A complex convergence of strategic, political and economic factors underlies the construction of the first nuclear power plant in the Philippines -- a Westinghouse Light Water Reactor exported by the U.S. In this essay, we evaluate proponents arguments for nuclear power in the Philippines and demonstrate that the pro-nuclear ideology is unconvincing. By examining nuclear power in the context of export-oriented industrialization, conflicting class interests, and U.S.-Philippine relations, we explain why nuclear power was adopted -- an analysis not easily generalizable to other Third World countries which have chosen the nuclear option. --From the introduction
