Summary, etc. | in others I did not make this effort and I would prefer to let the reader see the context of the essays. By way of acknowledgement, slightly altered versions of several of the pieces included were published in the Diliman Review, U.P. Newsletter, Philippine Communication Journal, Mandala, National Midweek, Business Day Magazine, Manila Chronicle and Ani. A professional chair requiring the holder to produce and encouragement from Dr. Gode Calleja, a pioneer in alternative publishing, Prof. Amelia L. Bonifacio, director of the UP Creative Writing Center, and Mr. Gelacio Guillermo, a promoter of people's literature, provided the motivation for coming up with this volume. I am very much obliged to Fidel Rillo for the book and cover design, and to the family for providing initial reader response that compelled me to take a second look at the pieces. It is gratuitous of course to say that errors of any kind are my sole responsibility. --Preface of the book. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | This collection consists of observations on Philippines writing and culture originally presented as remarks at gatherings of writers, cultural workers, and academicians from 1988 to 1989. Only three were intended as articles for journals. None were written for scholarly or esoteric reasons. All were meant to be read by those concerned about a society in crisis. Of course, I cannot be sure about their reception. Returning in late 1985 after thirteen years abroad, I did not anticipate that opportunities to speak before groups would yield a number of drafts that became the basis for this collection. In some I tried to update facts |
