Summary, etc. This workbook - Effective Pre-Reading - consists of three parts. Part One consists of exercises on visual discrimination, including skills in analyzing and interpreting certain illustrations and situations. This attentive observation to configuration, shape and size of objects is an important prerequisite reading skills which leads directly into visual memory for words and habits of observation of word parts and letter forms. Part Two contains simple and popular nursery rhymes presented through pictures and printed words. Reciting rhymes is an interesting activity for young children. Through rhymes, the speaking vocabulary is enlarged and the reading interests of children are developed. By reciting rhymes to the children by the teacher, children develop auditory skills - another important pre-reading skill. As the teacher recites a rhyme the children should be asked to look at the lines as well as the pictures. By this means, the children develop the habit of moving their eyes from left to right. They also acquire the notion that the printed words and sentences represent the message. Part Three of this workbook contains some popular stories for young children which every kindergarten teacher obviously is familiar with. While the teacher relates the story, the children look at the pictures. This activity becomes a "guided story-telling period." -Preface of the book.
