| Summary, etc. | The compilers of this anthology are compared to the proverbial merchant of precious stones who was asked to make a necklace inlaid with various priceless stones. He had a hard time with his job because his collection included other jewels as beautiful and as flawless as those he had picked out, and because too, he had but one chain to string together. To solve the difficulty, he decided to be guided by the criterion that the value of the finished product was to be measured from this standpoint: Were the stones he set as good at least, if not better than what he had discarded? --From the foreword |
