520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This symposium is the first known effort to consider Rizal as a universal man. The chairman of the Commission, Hon. Geronima T. Pecson, speaking at the organization meeting attended by distinguished Rizalists who had been chosen as speakers at the symposium, said, "To commemorate the first centenary of the birth of our hero, what could be more fitting both to Filipinos and the troubled world, than to present Rizal not only as a liberator of his people who used not the sword but the power of his pen and example but also one who in his time fired and sustained their aspirations by the force of the very postulates on human rights and dignity for which many years later the League of Nations and the United Nations were organized--the basic principles upon which are built all current efforts to emancipate mankind from all kinds of exploitation?" She thought that propagation of Rizal's thoughts, writings and life of self-sacrifice would enhance the prestige of our nation, stimulate pride in our race, furnish us the drive for purposeful living, and strengthen faith in the goodness of man and the fortitude of mankind beset with strife in many parts of the world and threatened constantly by the atom. --From the preface
