Summary, etc. This dictionary draws upon multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives that illuminate the nature nad significance of sport, and in particular its social and cultural meanings, at levels from recreational participation in everyday life through to high-performance competition in international events. The most extensive subcategory within this dictionary is therefore the concepts and theories, providing an interpretative framework, from sociocultural studies, for understanding sport cultures. It also offers sports and games as its second largest categories of entries, taking up almost a quarter of the text. The third largest category is biographies, not just sporting champions or innovators, but also of administrators and organizers, philosophers and politicians, novelists, and educators: people who have taken a view on sport and its place in society, and whose view has influenced sporting trends and formations, how others see sport, or how sport is perceived in relation othe rcultural forms.
