Summary, etc. Alejandrino G. Hufana, eminent and indefatigable poet in English and Iloko scholar since the 1950s, has reinvented an old Provencal Verse-form called enueg (from Old French for "vexation"). That he calls his version "canticle" and "oratorio" suggests that, in working out his two dominant motifs of home-sickness and homecoming, the imagination presses form its native clearing against all annoyances of the spirit and forges "a way with the bedrock word" toward insight and equipoise. "And I," says the poet, "alive and patched, do verse still/...I name style after/ My use, not use after style, not being glad/ To look forward to all this and that fad." _Gemino H. Abad. A.G. Hufana (1926, San Fernando, La Union) has retired as professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines and in his concomitant positions as Director of the U.P.Creative Writing Center and Director of the Cultural Center of the Philippines Library, which he co-founded and built up from zero. He was once a member of the revivable Primitives (art group based in U.P., Diliman) and the U.P. Sunday art group that exhibited from Manila to the Ilocos. He holds lifetime memberships in the RAVENS, Gumil (Ilokano Writers Association of the Philippines), Writers Union of the Philippines, and U.P. Writers Club. He has had literary awards, encapsulated in the Republic Cultural Heritage Award. Not age or disease (recently, chronic bronchitis), or indigence can restrict his retirement activities in Poro Point (craft, abstraction and transparency), not just yet, at over 70.
