Summary, etc. |
Based on primary documents and interviews, Baluyut's book, Institutions and Icons of Patronage: Arts and Culture in the Philippines during the Marcos Years, 1965-1986, seeks to understand the politics and aesthetics of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos' rule through the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Philippine High School for the Arts, and the National Museum of the Philippines. As institutional elaborations of the concept and existing modes of reciprocity, these were established and/or restructured to promote national art and culture. Rather than interpret the Marcoses' support only as political propaganda, Baluyut construes their rhetoric and gestures as a spectacular performance as patrons and icons, engendering both defiance and reverence among their constituents. Through formal and contextual analyses of visual and verbal representation, this book signifies a critical reversal of the damnatio memoriae committed against Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos in Philippine art history and serves as a timely reminder of reciprocity and/as vengeance at the specter of a Marcos restoration.
