For the theme underlying the pieces in this book is that the road to progress can be cleared only by rebelling against those traditions that hold progress back. The tradition of dependence. The tradition of dependence on the national politician. The tradition of patronage. The tradition of pork barrel. The tradition of colonialism, of dictatorship by the central government. The tradition of tenancy, of dependence on the landlord for every decision. The tradition of paternalism. The tradition of surrendering to the cycles of fate. The tradition of bahala na. The tradition of gulong ng palad. The tradition of extravagance and improvidence. The tradition of superstitious fatalism. The tradition of thinking that one can do nothing for oneself. But the book is also called Revolt Against Tradition because of the very fact that it exists. For its very existence represents a break from the traditional politics of this country. It embodies a comprehensive and realizable program in place of the usual empty shibboleths. It expresses vital ideas instead of the tired, old platitudes. It offers concrete, definite and far-reaching solutions instead of palliatives. It calls for change instead of coddling the people in their traditional complacency. It summons the people to drive to greatness on their own efforts, instead of promising to do everything for them.
