520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This series of anthologies presents in chronological order a selection of literary texts in Cebuano. The present volume ranges from 1940 to 1988. An earlier volume presented Cebuano poetry from 'pre-Spanish' times to 1940. In selecting texts for inclusion, the editors were guided by the following general principles: distribution of texts in time, representativeness in themes and styles, and literary merit. A liberality of outlook that highlights the variety of Cebuano poetry--instead of strict formalist standards--informed the selection. The translation of Cebuano poetic texts to the English language presented great difficulties. Sound values (such as Cebuano's polysyllabic and assonantal qualities) and meanings and nuances of native terms do not easily translate and much is lost in the English version. The translators decided to attempt a balance between two options: a strict linguistic translation, on one hand, and, on the other, a poetic reconstruction of texts in a new language. Premium was placed on readability while hewing as close as possible to the original word, phrase, or line. The sense-unit, rather than the line, was taken as the unit of translation. --Selection and Translations
