520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Published in conjunction with the exhibition of 18th - 19th century Philippine costumes from the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, The Netherlands at the Ayala Museum in 2007, this book documents twenty-two costumes that were acquired by the National Museum of Ethnology in 1886 from a French diplomat who lived in Manila in the late 19th century. Including embroidered silk trousers, ladies blouses, and wraparound skirts (tapis), these fine garments "attest to a sophisticated, stratified society in which appropriate attire was socially prescribed according to rank and power. Manifesting strong foreign influences, they reflect the transnational inflection of Philippine society in the late colonial period."
