This edition is a refinement of my original lecture notes in DEVC 197, Introduction to Development Communication Research, which was published in 1985 after two years of testing and revisions. The book was designed for undergraduate students in development communication, but I have been aware that most of the users have been graduate students not only in communication but in the social sciences, as well as students (graduate and undergraduate) in the technical fields like agriculture. At least one school in Metro Manila used the original edition as textbook in its mass communication research course. The original edition had many shortcomings that I have tried to correct in this Revised Edition. Still, the book is not very exhaustive because the idea is that the user must also refer to other sources rather than depend entirely on this publication. However, I can say that most of the basic things you ought to be familiar with in preparing your thesis proposal are discussed in this book. In this edition, I have added new sections and materials. For example, a brief discussion of when you should have a hypothesis in your research proposal is included. There, too, is a detailed discussion of how to prepare a questionnaire, how to construct tables, and techniques of visualizing research data. These additions will hopefully make this book more practical and useful to beginners in social science research.--Preface of the book
