This is the first fully illustrated monograph on a Filipino artist, covering the lifework of the most popular Filipino painter in history. The story of his life is placed in context with the turbulent period in which he lived, from the founding of the Katipunan to the end of World War II, until his death, in 1972. The monograph focuses on the period which shaped the art of Amorsolo, which essentially covers the American occupation of the country. The rise to fame and the declining years are viewed within the relationship between artist and society. The 235 illustrations, 114 of which are in color, were carefully selected from more than 400 examples and cover Amorsolo's earliest known works from 1914 to his recent paintings of the 60's.
