The photos and essays tell us how people prepared their food, traveled from island to island, represented themselves through theater, and yes, how they fashioned for themselves the nation they could become. . By showing the context within which the political events took place, the book encourages us to become aware of the individuals and families affected by the revolution of 1896, and to see the revolution in terms of their aspirations. Also, it gives us a clue, among other things, why the revolution happened when it did and not many years before.
