Summary: This is not a history of the Philippines, and other neighboring Asian countries as its title claims. It is a history rather of the Christian conquest of pagans in the Philippines and Japan, achieved by the first Spanish Franciscan missionaries in the sixteenth century. To judge the book therefore as history per se is to miss the whole aim of the book. This then is a chronicled series of impressions in the missionary annals of the Sons of St. Francis of Assisi whose sole source of strength lay in the motto: poverty, joy, and sacrifice. Without the last of these three, no great human achievement of yesterday or today is possible.
