The life St. John Baptist De La Salle, who was born on 30 April 1651 and died on 7 April 1719, overlapped almost perfectly with the personal reign of Louis XIV which began on March 8, 1661 and ended on his death on September 1715. This period was called "the Splendid Century" in French history. This paper attempts to describes how this historical settings did affect the life and works of the founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian School.
