The Institute of Developing Economic (IDE), a semi-governmental research institute based in Tokyo, Japan, established informal ties with the University of the Philippines School of Economics (UPSE) in the late 1960s. Since then, both institutions have become partners in various research endeavors, with IDE inviting several UPSE faculty members as visiting research associates. Through its ASEAN Economic Development Program (ASEDP), IDE has initiated collaborative projects primarily intended for the study of economic development and related issues in some ASEAN-member countries, including the Philippines. A series of IDE publications, including those focusing on particular aspects of the Philippine economy, have come out of these projects. --From the preface
