This book covers the whole period, admittedly from the perspective of a relatively confined section of South Manila. It is remarkable because it is the memories of a boy who went through the day-to-day happenings of the period and recorded these in his young mind, now shared in writing for the first time with his family and friends and colleagues. The account is straightforward, clear , but dramatic in its simple narration of both the happy and bad features of the experience, the humanity of some of the japanese, and the inhumanity of the Marines, who formed the rearguard of General Iwabuchi's retreating forces. It describes dramatically the bombings, the air battles, the skirmishes and near death incidents as well as the daily life and the heightened pace of hostilities during the last months of the War.
