It is increasingly obious that nihilism is our foremost problem, underlying most others. This wide-ranging anf perceptive study uses cross-cultural perspectives to explore the meaning of nihilism for us today, ant its possibilities for revivifying philosophy. Dr. Elwood's analysis of contemporary philosophy's predicament seems right to the point, and his handling of nihilism sensitive. This work is especially valuable for the way it develops the implications of Nishitani's thought for the issues raised by postmodernism and the cybernetic revolution. This is fine and valuable work, in a genre that remains too small but I hope will be increasing in the near future. It deserves a wide readership. -Dr. David R. Loy, Faculty of International Studies Bunkyo University, Chigasaki, Japan.
