Jawi or surats is a generic term covering correspondence and other forms of discourse, which express personal opinions and sentiments or official policies and recommendations directly written by or scribed in behalf of the individuals comprising the Sultanate hierarchy. This volume covers some 300 Jawi documents that are directly and mainly related to the affairs of the Sultanate dating back to the late 19th century and concluding with the establishment of Philippine Commonwealth in 1935. It highlights the surat as a tangible evidence of the ethnic creativity of Muslim Filipinos.
