Summary: The Forces of Globalization-Paradigms, Funds, Technologies, modes, and Practices-are on the March. This unbridled onslaught obliterates geographical demarcations, promotes the cultural hegemony of a "global village," threatens the fragile sustainability of natural resources, and sucks the breath out of the life-world. All these are colonizing forms that undercut the autonomy of poor, weak, and helpless nation-states, and compel them to adopt policies and embark on projects dictated by transnational corporate interests. In such a global landscape, the allocation, extraction, and utilization of resources-natural and invented-become imperative for economic and political survival. Equally crucial, however, is the need to examine the state's environmental theorizing and governance (here concretized by forestry management) and to situate the political therein, as articulated by progressive academics, cause-oriented groups, mass movements, and enlightened civil society.
