Summary: The sequence of the Seventh Edition may be summarized as follows: Part I has been extensively revised and streamlined to consist of four chapters (instead of five). It begins by setting forth a framework for understanding abnormal, or maladaptive, behavior, including common misconceptions, accepted definitions, broader discussion of issues of classification, and a new section on issues in scientific research in abnormal psychology. Part II details the clinical pictures, causal factors, and treatment and outcomes of maladaptive patterns. It begins with a discussion of the nature of stress and of adjustment disorders and more severe posttraumatic stress disorders. This is followed by chapters on the anxiety-based disorders, personality disorders, psychophysiologic disorders, affective disorders, schizophrenic and paranoid disorders, substance-use disorders, psychosexual disorders, organic mental disorders and mental retardation, and finally, behavior disorders of childhood and adolescence. Part III deals with the areas of assessment, therapy, and current issues.
