Originally presented as the author's thesis (Master's University of the Philippines) under title: Kasaysayan at retorika ng balagtasan
A pioneering collection of balagtasan texts, which although exceptionally popular in the mid 1920s up to the 1930s, have never been seriously studied. Also offers the balagtasan as serious literature for study, while providing scholarly history of the genre. Winner, 2000 Gintong Aklat Award, for Literature (BIP-ADMUP).
