This is story telling at its purest at its simplest, without pretense, without any attempt at artfulness as if most of them could be told with the old traditional beginning, if the writer had so desired: "Once upon a time, there lived. . ." but not ending in the usual, "and they lived happily ever after." No, not quite. There is sadness in the lives of these characters: death, frustration, violence, deprivation. Each seems touched with some kind of disaster. --From the introduction
