Summary: As the first major step in the revision of the Secondary Course in Literature to meet more nearly the needs of the students, this volume has been compiled. It represents the first serious attempt to make use of exclusively local contributions in literature as subject matter for classroom instruction in secondary schools. After a year's trial of the first edition put out in 1927, a revised edition has been prepared with a view to incorporating additional materials not included in the first edition and with a view further to improving the materials already included. --From the foreword
