Summary: The history of Negros since 1850 is largely an account of the problems, the benefits and costs created by the upsurge of economic activity in the Philippines starting that period. It is one that cannot be divorced from the broader realm of international economic relations in the middle of the nineteenth century -- a period marked by an unprecedented level of technological achievement for Western Europe thus ushering in a new international economic order.
