Summary: During the years of martial law, one man has stood out as a fighter for justice: Jose W. Diokno, lawyer, once Secretary of Justice, twice elected Senator, and always a nationalist. He was arrested when martial law was imposed and detained for two years -- one month of which he spent in solitary confinement -- without charges, without even interrogation. Shortly after he was released, he organized the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG), which has defended the majority of political prisoners and continues to defend the poor, the dispossessed and the oppressed whose struggle for justice expose them to arrest and detention - or worse - as "subversives." Since 1975, he has been chairman of the Civil Liberties Union of the Philippines (CLUP) and the latter's trenchant attacks on the martial law regime and its policies have contributed and continue to contribute much to the people's resolve to regain their freedom and independence. --From the foreword
