Summary: The documents that are contained in this book were selected, compiled and annotated out of the Bauer collection now in the library of the Royal Academy of History of Madrid by Prof. Leandro Tormo Sanz of the Central University of Madrid. They have been translated from the original Spanish into English by Dean Antonio Molina formerly of the University of Sto. Tomas. The present selection depicts life in this country in its various aspects as it was lived a century ago. Fortunately, most of the documents selected are not official documents. They are private letters and hence have the advantages of giving us an insight into social, economic and political conditions as they existed then from the point of view of the private citizen.
