This book is a compilation of essays and letters which have appeared from time to time in local periodicals. And here it is, a record of impressions, fugitive moods and moments--the first fruits, as it were, of our thinking--or shall we say the fragments of a broken idealism which we try to reconstruct? Perhaps the reader will notice in these pages an occasional repetition of a favorite thought or idea, a recurring note or motif, as in a musical composition, but such a feature, we suppose, is more or less inevitable in a work of this kind.
