We have quoted so extensively from the writings of others, including whole poems, that we might well have used as a title Text and Commentary, but that sounded too stuffy. Text and Pretext suggested itself but that had already been used as the title of a book by Aldous Huxley, an anthology of poems and some prose passages with commentaries by him. Since all the pieces in our book were originally published, except for a brief postscript, in the Philippines Free Press magazine before it was closed by martial law, the title finally used seemed best. The essays and poems have undergone some revision. --Preface of the book.
