Pilandok is one of the favorite characters of the Maranao folktales. Like the stories of Juan Tamad (Tagalog, Pampanga), Juan Usong (Bicol) and Juan Pusong (Visaya), the adventures of Pilandok revolve around his peculiar trait of deceiving or playing tricks on people, a quality characteristics of the Spanish "picaro". His physical short-comings (he is thin and sluggish) he tries to make up for by being shrewd and clever, victimizing usually royalty. --From the preface
