The best ways of learning about the origins and context of visual art is by changing the context within which art is seen, from general views to specific ones, hence, the structure of the elements in this encyclopedia. A chronological table shows the temporal relationships between the cultures that have given the world its heritage of visual art. The arts of the cultures are discussed in the 54 chapters that make up the major part of the five volumes of the encyclopedia. Each chapter shows how art emerged within contexts molded by beliefs, aims, ideals, patronage, and more general social and economic factors. The major creative individuals are located similarly within the contexts of their times and their personal contacts.
