This book is one in a series the Philippine Centennial Commission is publishing-cooperatively with the University of the Philippines Press-of winners of the Centennial Literary Prize awarded by the Commission as part of its celebration of the centennial of Philippine independence in 1998. Never before has a literary competition of this magnitude been undertaken in the Philippines. It included most of the literary categories: the novel, the essay, the epic poem, the drama, and the screenplay, and in both English and Filipino. A special prize was also awarded to an epic poem in Spanish. The Commission stipulated only that every entry should be set within the historical era whose defining event was the proclamation of colonial Asia's first free Republic on June 12, 1898.
