Artists manifested a tendency to shun away from Euro-American paradigms toward engaging with their immediate environments and used indigenous forms, materials and technology. It was observed that in early 1980s, Malaysian art showed neo-regionalist tendencies. Some artists raised social,economic and political concerns to reasses a more complex and multicultural matrix.
