Summary: The authors hold that authentic theologizing cannot aim at less than conveying Christ's message to the people in such a way that it transfigures their attitudes, moral conduct, life of prayer and worship and moves them to commit themselves to the task of ridding society of injustice and structures of sin. The challenge is huge. How to explain Christ's mystery to Filipinos in such a way that it will nourish a spirituality both vitally deep and doctrinally sound? How to conscientize and mobolize Christians so that they may participate in making Filipino society a suitable prelude to God's eschatological reign over humankind? It is not suprising that the theological production in these past decades should have devoted an important part of its energies to elaborating a response to the challenge. And we should not wonder if in coming years this theme were still to constitute a background music for Filipino Theology. A two-directional thrust appears convenient in the elaboration of Filipino Theology: towards action and towards doctrinal depth. Such a two-way direction would aid the ordinary faithful to rid themselves of superstitious accretions in their prayer and communitary life, as well as to defend themselves from the confusing assertions of non-Catholic seets.
