Provides both British and American spoken pronunciations and has a study sections introducing fascinating pronunciation topics such as differences between British and American pronunciation, Weak forms, and intonation.Presents words and names of foreign origin are given in what is felt to be the pronunciation likely to be used among educated speakers of English. Gives syllable divisions in all cases, since it is felt that foreign learners will find the information useful. Syllable division is marked with the symbol recommended by the International Phonetic Association. Pronunciation typical of a more casual, informal style of speaking is given for common words , and a more careful pronunciation for uncommon words. Features essential information on pronunciation of proper names, pronunciation of all inflected forms of each word, and a larger amount of detail about variant pronunciations. A more broadly-based and accessible model accent for British English is represented , and pronunciations for one broadly conceived accent of American English have been added.
