Summary: When the Spaniards arrived in the Western hemisphere, they did not find any El Dorado with streets paved with gold, but they did find cities of great splendor and civilizations that in some respects had outstripped their own. This remarkable culture was lost to history for centuries, however, because the conquistadors sacked these great cities which were completely deserted and forgotten. Only in recent times were the cities of the Mayas, the Incas and the various tribes of Central and South America rediscovered, providing archeologists with some knowledge of the truly noteworthy accomplishments of these peoples, and making the beauty of their many and diverse arts generally known. In this new volume in the Art of the World Library, Hans-Dietrich Disselhoff, Director of the Museum of Anthropology in Berlin and Professor at the Free University of Berlin, has written about the cities and civilizations of South America and Sigvald Linne, an authority on the subject, has written about Mexico and Central America. Their book describes broad historical, sociological and religious backgrounds of cultures, very different from our own, which produced much that was beautiful. This book dispels some of the mists in which their origins are hidden.
