About the Book : This book focuses on the basic features and elements of sustainable tourism in natural destinations, invariably refered to as ecotourism. It presents in simple language the basic concepts of tourism in the context of sustainable development, which can serve as the theoretical foundation for implementing sustainable tourism in the Philippines. An analysis of the issues and challenges involved in simultaneously addressing the potentially conflicting matters of sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and tourism development in natural destinations is presented. Several case studies, based on the author's field visits, interviews and surveys as well as literature review, explore the good and bad sides of tourism in the country. Lessons learned from these case studies are useful to tourism managers and tour operators for improving tourism practices and to decision-makers for developing and implementing better tourism policies. Additionally, the book uses numerous references from referreed journals and other academic publications to stimulate scholarly discourse in tourism as an academic discipline. Thus, it is also a useful reference material for college students interested in tourism studies.
