This anthology gathers an affluence of essays and articles showcasing some of the best products of the J. Elizalde Navarro National Workshop in Criticism on the Arts and Humanities from 2009 to 2012. The multiplicity of topics and issues raised concurs with those of current global praxis in the arts and humanities, from diaspora to digital poetry, bodies to beauty, Shakespeare to Gina Apostol, queer politics to metacriticism, and in particular, the persistent, disquieting enquiry concerning what is real in today's tilting planet. This collection further affirms that Philippine criticism does not tarry, but in ripe seasons, it waters the ground of knowledge, overturns the soil of presumptions, and strikes the politics of silences with bolts of significant, stimulating discourse. In doing so, criticism fails not in its time-honored role as the gatekeeper and tender of the arts. For its gallant mission, the JEN anthology should be hailed with trumpets of jubilation.
