Summary: This volume is an abridged copy of the two-volume edition of The Philippine Islands brought out in 1928. For those who desire the fuller text, with notes, appendices, references, and a fairly full documentation the original edition should be sought. The book was originally broguht out with the approval of the then Secretary of War who desired that the subject matter should be made of record. Access was given to the archives of the War Department, and General Leonard Wood who at that time was Governor-General of the Philippines caused his bureau chiefs and secretaries to make the archives of the Philippine Government available. The author was fortunate in securing the full-time assistance of the Honorable Frank W. Carpenter who had held important positions in the Islands for a protracted period of time, including that of Executive Secretary of the Insular Government and that of Governor of the Moro Province, and who assisted in supplying information and seeking original material. --Preface of the book.
