Summary: Communication, both oral and written, is a sharing of ideas and feelings in the hope of exchange with another. This two-way process engages both parties in open feedback. Therefore, communication can be a celebration of diversity, since we all have varied backgrounds and experiences. At best, then, communication allows something new to be born - a new understanding, a new perspective, and perhaps, a new or a renewed way of life. At best, communication is a journey; during which, ideas are exchanged, bringing a new understanding or perspective to the fore. Sometimes, this may require coming the terms with another person's contribution in the process of sending and receiving messages. This is what the book is all about. SpeaC (Speak and Listen in Context) for Senior High School exposes YOU - the learners - to both the rudiments and the advanced skills of oral communication; that is, the development of listening and speaking skills and strategies in consideration of a clear purpose and context. With the goal of becoming effective (oral) communicators, and considering that in the 21st century every person must first be an effective communicator, senior high school students are lead through processes of listening and speaking, enriched with viewing activities. The framework of Understanding by Design (UBD) is followed, and authentic communication is simulated in various contexts. The backward process of this framework engages students, with the desired results of goals in mind, in learner-centered and fun activities and simulations of real-world communication to prepare them for the challenges of the 21st century. Task-based learning, as part of the framework, allows you, the reader to realize that learning happens more meaningfully when you immerse yourselves, individually or collaboratively, in varied tasks or activities prepared for you as scaffolds towards constructing new perspectives and strategies to survive in the global arena. All these are planned, focusing on your gradual development of knowledge and skills, until you reach transfer of skills or independent learning. Needless to say, such activities, (including grammar-related activities, as the circumstances call for them), are meant to create opportunities for you to become communicatively competent, global individuals - local in concerns but global in vision and perspective. Most importantly, the activities are mapped out, aligned to the standards set by the K-12 curriculum. --from the Preface of the book.
