This defect is the separation of human "values" from the Faith-life of the ordinary person. Whether based on a misconceived application of "separation of Church and State" to education, or on a secularistic bias drawn from values education studies abroad-whatever the reason, the complete separation of Filipinos' values from their religious faith makes no sense at all. What may be understandable-though hardly commendable-in the secularized nations of the "First World", cannot be said to fit the indigenous scene of the Filipino. Moreover the defect cannot be rectified by some impersonal, social science survey of religious faith practices. Such treatment misses the whole personal inner value and motivation of the Filipino's religious convictions, commitment and belief. The author has therefore performed an extraordinary service for all educators by drawing together, in a truly insightful manner, the DECS Values Education scheme and a basic Christian Religious Education Program for high schools. The work does not pretend to be definitive or completely comprehensive in any way. Rather it is far more helpful by its modest presentation of one specific way of interrelating values and Christian religious education. May this excellent, careful work not only profit readers personally, but also motivate them toward similar creative institutional initiatives in their schools. ER -
