His life of nearly eighty years (1842-1920) covers a very interesting and important period in the history of Christian Brothers in the United States. He was connected with the Christian Brothers in the United States from the time of their first foundation in 1845 in Baltimore so that to write his life is almost equivalent to writing the history of the Brothers during the years of their greatest progress in America
