Ong won the 2001 NVM Gonzalez Award for fiction for his story "Days of Darkness, White Nights."; Woman of Amkaw, which won the UP President's Award; J. NEIL C. GARCIA'S other books include Closet Quivers (1992), Our Lady of the Carnival (1996), Closet Queeries (1997), Slip/pages (1998) and the recently published The Sorrows of Water (2000). His ground-breaking study, Philippine Gay culture : the last 30 Years, was awarded a National Book Award in 1996. Together with Danton Remoto, he edits Ladlad, the definitive anthology-series of Philippine gay writing. Garcia currently teaches at the University of the Philippines (Diliman), where he serves as an associate for poetry at the Likhaan : UP Creative Writing Center, and where he is also finishing a Ph.D. in English Studies. For the UP Likhaan, he has edited two anthologies : The Likhaan Book of Phillipine Criticism (1992-1997), and The Likhaan Book of Poetry and Fiction (1998). Garcia's latest book is Kaluluwa : New and Selected Poems, published in 2001 by the University of Santo Tomas Press. His fourth book of essays, Occasional Prose, will come out later in 2002. CHARLSON ONG is a senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines Department of English and Comparative Literature, where he teaches a course in Creative Writing. He has won prizes at the Palanca Memorial Awards, Asiaweek, Philiipines Free Press, Graphic magazine, UP Creative Writing Center and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
